The Ganga has been reversed from the earliest time and today is regarded as the holiest river by Hindus. Places of Hindu pilgrimage called Tirtha that are situated on the Ganga have particular significance. Hindu cast the ashes of their dead into the river. Believing that this gives the deceased Direct passage to heaven, cremation temples have been built in many places on the bank of the River Ganga.
