Ganges river, Hindi Ganga, great river of the plain of the northern Indian subcontinent. Although

Officially as well as popularly called Ganga in Hindi and in other Indian languages. Internationally

Known by its conventional name the Ganges. From time immemorial it has been the holy river Of

Hinduism. Rising in the Himalayas and emptying in the Bay of Bengal. It drains one fourth of the

Territories of India. And it’s basin supports hundreds of millions of people. The greater part of the Indo

gigantic plain, across which it flows in the heartland of the region known as ‘Hindustan’. It has been

the cradle of successive civilizations from the Maurya Empire of Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. To the

Mughal Empire, founded in the 16th century. The general direction of the river flows from Northwest

to southeast. The Ganga rises in the southern great Himalayas on the Indian side of the border with

Tibet. It’s five headstream Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Mandakini, Dauliganga and the Pindar, all rise in the

Mountain region of northern Uttarakhand state. The true source of Ganga is considered to be at

Gaumukh is about 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Gangotri. The Alaknanda and Bhagirathi river unite

At Devprayag, to form the main stream known as Ganga. And it emerged from the mountain at

Rishikesh. It then flows onto the plain at Haridwar. Now within the state of Uttar Pradesh the river

Receives its two principal right bank tributaries. The Yamuna river which flows from Delhi then

Roughly parallel the southeast ward to the Ganga before joining it near prayagraj and tons which flows

North from the Vindhya range in Madhya Pradesh state and join the Ganga just below the prayagraj.

The Ganga next entered the state of Bihar. Where it main tributaries from the Himalayas region of

Nepal to the north are the Gandak, The river then skirt the Rajmahal hill to the south and flow

southeast To Farakka in the central west bengal state. West Bengal is the last Indian state that the

Ganga entered And after it flow into Bangladesh. The western most distributary of the delta are the

Bhagirathi and The Hugli river. On the east bank of which stand the huge metropolis of Kolkata. The

water than flow Through the delta region to the Bay of Bengal via innumerable channel. The largest of

which is known As the Meghna estuary. To the seaward side of the delta as a whole. There is a vast

stretch of tidal mangrove forest and Swampland. The region is called Sundarban.
