GANGA LEELA or GANGA PLAY

Gangotsav
(Ganga Utsav in India)

Ganga Leela will be another main event that is going to be held first time in India for all eleven days projecting the stories associated or related to Maa Ganga like how Maa Ganga came on Earth from Swarglok, and also the stories defining the significance of Maa Ganga or Sacred River Ganga. The Ganga is known by several names including Jahnavi, Gange, Shubhra, Sapteshwari, Nikita, Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, and Vishnupadi. The major story associated with Maa Ganga is when the Goddess Ganga came on earth praying by sage Bhagirath.

Hence, the story begins in ancient times, there was a time when demons ruled the earth, and thus, these demons used to annoy the sages who were meditating. The same scenario continued for a longer time but, one day, all the sages prayed to the sage Agastya for freeing them from such torture by the demons, as the result, sage Agastya drank the sea along with the demons. Although the demons came to an end, the earth became void of water and the humans were facing problems. Hence, the humans prayed to another sage named Bhagirath for freeing them from this calamity of droughts.

To make the humans relieved from this scenario, he prayed for thousands of years and then, went to Brahma for praying to him that he take down the river Ganga to earth. After, Maa Ganga came on Earth; it was Lord Shiva who agreed to channel her flow. Hence, this was the only reason that the River Ganga flowed from the hair path of Lord Shiva. The place where the river Ganga water originated is known as Gangotri. Also, when the Ganga originated from Lord Shiva’s jata known as Jatashankari.

Another story that reflects the significance of the Sacred River Ganga is that the Ganga is the only river that flows from three major worlds Heaven/ Swarga, Earth/ Prithvi, and Hell/ Patala. Now, if we talk about the Holy River or sacred water Ganga then, its followers prefer to take bath in this pious water for washing off their sins. Also, there is believed among the people that touching the Ganga water helps them in attaining Moksha or salvation. And thus, this is the only reason that the ashes of the dead person are immersed in this holy river.

The third story is that the sage Bhagirathi (a legendary king of the Ikshvaku dynasty) prayed for thousands and went to Brahma for praying about taking Maa Ganga on earth as she is the only way for making his ancestors take nirvana as his ancestors were cursed by Sage Kapila.
